Hi and welcome back to my blog! Today I have a review for The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. This was one of my most anticipated releases for 2018, and recently, anticipated releases have let me down. I wouldn’t say this is a new favorite, but I would recommend it!
Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.
To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.
In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

What I Did Not Like:
For the first 75% or so of the book, I was bored. Nothing about the story really kept me hooked, and it felt like we were dragging our feet.
The ‘Real World’ Element
The story is mostly based in the faerie world, but there are parts set in the real world. I don’t think those parts are done well! It was too strange to be in a faerie forest and then suddenly be in…Target? It made me feel detached from the story.
I was finally getting into the story, but the ending squashed the momentum. It was incredibly anti-climactic and forgettable.
What I Did Like:
The characters were all weird, and not great people, but they kept me intrigued. I kept reading because I was interested in them!
The Faerie World-Building
While I didn’t like some of the world-building, I loved the faerie world! I loved the politics, the dark, eerie feeling, and the actual faeries!
The Last 25-ish% of the Book
I felt that a lot of the story dragged along, but towards the end, I was really into it! The writing even got better towards the end, and I felt more connected to the story. I can’t wait for the next one!
Overall, I gave The Cruel Prince 4/5 stars!
Thank you for reading!
